Cutting the Squares

Back in the 1980s when red phone boxes were everywhere in England, the Wombles were number three in the charts, and Sylvester McCoy was Doctor Who; a young would-be actress went to an audition for a kid’s math show. While waiting to go in, she got into a heated argument with one of the other actors about how appropriate her neck-line was for a kid’s show. She was upset but it didn’t hurt her performance. She wasn’t successful, but then three weeks later the studio called and asked if she’d like to take the job after all. The first choice presenter (the young man she’d been arguing with) had died in what they would only describe as ‘a bizarre accident in a phone box’. She did six hours work, … Read entire article »

The Amityville Horror

Everyone knows about the large, beautiful house that sets right on the shore on Ocean Ave. in Amityville, New York. Was it real or a hoax? Most people seem to think that it was just a hoax, but most famous paranormal investigators still maintain the house is haunted by an evil presence. In November 1974, Ronald DeFeo murdered his entire family, shooting them all with a .35 Marlin Rifle. According to DeFeo he was being controlled by evil spirits and heard voices. He was sentenced to six life sentences. A year later Kathy and George Lutz moved in. They moved out after a month. They made incredible claims of black ooze coming from toilets, doors blown off hinges, unexplained teeth marks, a pit to hell in the basement, and … Read entire article »

The Message Under the Stamp

During the war a soldier faithfully wrote his mother every week so she would know he was all right. One week she didn’t get a letter and immediately began to worry. A couple of weeks later, she got a letter from the Army saying that her son had been captured and was being held in a Prisoner-of-War camp. They assured her that they had no reason to believe the American prisoners were being mistreated in any way. A few weeks later the woman finally received another letter from her son, it read: "Dear Mom, Try not to worry about me, they are treating us well and I’ll be released as soon as the war is over. Make sure that little Teddy gets the stamp for his collection. Love you, … Read entire article »

In Memory of ‘Shifty’

We’ve heard a lot about the big splashy memorial services for the likes of a drugged-up, wacked-out entertainer, Michael Jackson, and a cowardly drunk who happened to be a U.S. Senator (Kennedy). I would like to propose a nationwide memorial service for Darrell "Shifty" Powers. Here’s why… Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Infantry. If you’ve seen Band of Brothers on HBO or the History Channel, you know Shifty. His character appears in all 10 episodes, and Shifty himself is interviewed in several of them. I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago. I didn’t know who he was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman having … Read entire article »

Officer of the Day Vengeance

I’ve heard this legend told about barracks at two different posts- one in Germany, and the other in Colorado. The story goes that a young Lieutenant was assigned OOD duty one weekend. OOD means ‘Officer of the Day’, and means that he’s the one who has to deal with any problems that come up. This young 2nd Lieutenant decided he was going to inspect some of the soldier’s rooms. He walked into a room to find it a mess, which shouldn’t have been a surprise on Saturday at 8pm. He started to try and give the guys hell for the condition of the room, and the fact that they were sitting around drinking beer, which is authorized in the Barracks, as long as the guys don’t drink during duty … Read entire article »

WHO THE HECK WAS KILROY? KILROY WAS HERE!

WHO THE HECK WAS KILROY? KILROY WAS HERE!

We all knew of Kilroy. In 1946 the American Transit Association, through its radio program, "Speak to America," sponsored a nationwide contest to find the REAL Kilroy, offering a prize of a real trolley car to the person who could prove himself to be the genuine article. Almost 40 men stepped forward to make that claim, but only James Kilroy from Halifax, Massachusetts had evidence of his identity. Kilroy was a 46-year old shipyard worker … Read entire article »

Old Ironsides

The U.S.S. Constitution (Old Ironsides) as a combat vessel carried 48,600 gallons of fresh (remember that figure) water for her crew of 475 officers and men. This was sufficient to last six months of sustained operations at sea. She carried no evaporators (fresh water distillers). However, let it be noted that according to her log, "On July 27, 1798, the U.S.S. Constitution sailed from Boston with a full complement of 475 officers and men, 48,600 gallons of fresh water, 7,400 cannon shot, 11,600 pounds of black powder and 79,400 gallons of rum." Her mission: "To destroy and harass English shipping." Making Jamaica on 6 October, she took on, according to her log, 826 pounds of flour and 68,300 gallons of rum. She then headed for the Azores, arriving there … Read entire article »
