Disappearing Pond

In Monmouth County, New Jersey, on 18th Ave in Belmar at one time was the trail that native American men used to return from fishing in the ocean to where their "squaws" were camped at "Squankum" (near Allaire). At the approximate junction of 18th Ave and the present day Allaire Rd there was a large pond.

One evening a large flock of geese landed on the pond. Overnight the pond froze. When the geese took off in the morning they took the ice that was attached to them away. There has not been a pond there since.

This story was published in "Outdoor Life" in the 1950's.
